WD Purple or WD Purple Pro? The decision that actually matters
Both are purple, both say surveillance, and they sit next to each other on the same shelf. The specifications are a tier apart.
Rule of thumb we apply when quoting
If the recorder runs face recognition, ANPR or perimeter analytics, or the chassis holds more than 16 drives, specify Purple Pro. Otherwise Purple is the correct and cheaper answer.
The line to look at
The read error rate. An order of magnitude difference in unrecoverable read errors matters enormously during a RAID rebuild on high-capacity drives, because a rebuild reads every sector on every remaining drive.
Why the workload rating decides the outcome
Workload rate limit is the volume of data a drive is engineered to read and write per year while still meeting its reliability rating.
A desktop drive sits around 55 TB/year. WD Purple is rated at 180 TB/year, roughly three times that. WD Purple Pro and Ultrastar reach 550 TB/year.
A 32-camera system recording continuously at 4MP will pass 180 TB inside a year without difficulty. That does not mean the drive fails on the day it crosses the line — it means the failure probability the manufacturer published no longer applies to you.

WD rates most Purple and Purple Pro models to a 65°C operating ceiling, and Ultrastar to 60°C. Ambient across the Sultanate runs past 45°C for months, and equipment rooms in warehouses, labour accommodation and remote industrial sites are frequently not cooled to spec.
Tarnish-resistant internal components are fitted to WD Purple from 3 TB upward and across the Purple Pro range. In Muttrah, Sohar and Salalah that is not a footnote — it is the reason to skip the 2 TB model even when the capacity would have been enough.

Do WD Purple drives have rotational vibration sensors?
