The 2 TB line — the specification split inside the range
WD Purple is not one product. There is a hard engineering break between the 1–2 TB models and everything from 3 TB upward, and it is not disclosed prominently.
What this means when you order
For any commercial multi-bay deployment, start at 3 TB. A 2 TB drive without RV sensors in an 8-bay chassis will throw read errors as its neighbours vibrate it, and in coastal Oman the absence of tarnish-resistant components is a real service-life question rather than a theoretical one.

Replacing legacy PURX and EJRX drives
A large number of Oman sites installed between roughly 2014 and 2018 are still running WD10PURX, WD20PURX, WD30PURX, WD40PURX, WD60PURX or the EJRX equivalents. These are IntelliPower 5400-RPM-class drives with 64 MB cache, and most are now past their design service life.

Worth saying to the client
If you are quoting a refresh on a site with PURX drives, the 3 TB and above replacements are a genuine capability upgrade rather than a like-for-like swap — worth saying, because it justifies the line item.
What AllFrame actually changes
The mechanical difference between a desktop drive and a surveillance drive is smaller than most specification sheets imply. The behavioural difference is not, and it lives almost entirely in firmware.
A desktop drive assumes a user is waiting for a file. When it meets a marginal sector it retries, and it will keep retrying — through deep recovery, head repositioning and re-reads — because returning correct data late is better than returning nothing. In a recorder that logic inverts. While the drive is busy recovering one sector, the write buffer behind it fills and the recorder starts discarding frames from every camera on the channel.
AllFrame caps that recovery window. The drive gives up on the marginal sector quickly, reports it, and keeps accepting writes. You lose a fraction of a second of one stream instead of losing coverage across the whole system while the drive works on a problem nobody is waiting for.
This is also why a desktop drive in an NVR often passes acceptance testing and then fails the client six months later. The failure mode is dropped footage under load, not a drive that stops working — and it only shows up when the site is busy, which is exactly when the footage matters.

Up to 64 single-stream HD cameras. Actual capacity depends on resolution, codec, frame rate and system configuration — a 64-camera figure at 1080P does not hold at 8MP.
What is the difference between WD Purple and WD Purple Pro?
Purple is rated at 180 TB per year with a three-year warranty. Purple Pro reaches 550 TB per year with a five-year warranty, supports 32 AI streams, removes the drive bay limit and improves the read error rate tenfold. Specify Pro for AI-enabled recorders.
Do all WD Purple drives have rotational vibration sensors?
No. The 1 TB and 2 TB models do not, and support up to 8 bays. From 3 TB upward RV sensors and tarnish-resistant components are fitted and 16-bay support applies. For commercial multi-bay work, start at 3 TB.
Are WD Purple drives CMR or SMR?
CMR with Advanced Format across the range, which is what keeps write performance predictable under continuous multi-stream recording.
Can I mix WD Purple with Seagate SkyHawk in the same recorder?
Mechanically yes, and many sites do. It is not ideal in a RAID array, where matched capacity, rotational speed and firmware behaviour give more predictable rebuild times. For JBOD recording it is a non-issue.
What warranty applies?
