Where GWN access points fit

GWN is Grandstream's Wi-Fi line, and it makes the most sense when the rest of the system is Grandstream too. If you're running GRP Wi-Fi desk phones or GXV video phones on wireless, the APs and phones come from one vendor and the voice traffic gets the QoS it needs.

The range here splits two ways. The GWN7630 and GWN7660E are indoor units for ceilings and walls. The three LR models are outdoor, long-range units for yards, car parks, compounds and the space between buildings.

Every model carries its own controller that can manage up to 50 GWN APs, so a small site doesn't need a separate controller box. Larger estates move to Grandstream's cloud or on-site management software. On price, the Wi-Fi 5 models sit at the bottom and the Wi-Fi 7 GWN7670LR at the top.

Grandstream GWN7630

Indoor Wi-Fi 5 Wave-2 access point

The GWN7630 is a ceiling or wall AP for offices with a lot of people on one floor. It runs 4x4:4 on both bands and Grandstream rates it for more than 200 concurrent clients, with coverage up to 175 meters in open space.

It has two Gigabit ports and is Wi-Fi 5, so for a new building where most laptops and phones are Wi-Fi 6 you'd normally pick the GWN7660E instead.

Grandstream GWN7630LR

Outdoor long-range Wi-Fi 5 access point

The GWN7630LR is the outdoor version of the GWN7630, with a weatherproof case and four detachable antennas you can swap for the job. Grandstream rates it for 250+ clients and up to 300 meters of coverage.

The IP66 rating applies when it's installed vertically. Mount it the way the datasheet shows, on a wall or pole, or the rating doesn't hold.

Grandstream GWN7660E

Indoor Wi-Fi 6 access point, AX3000

The GWN7660E is the default indoor pick for a new fit-out. It's Wi-Fi 6 with 2x2:2 on 2.4 GHz and 3x3:2 on 5 GHz, supports 160 MHz channels and WPA3, and handles 256 concurrent clients.

It draws 12.95 W at most and runs on standard PoE (802.3af) or PoE+, so older switches usually cope. There's one Gigabit port, not two.

Grandstream GWN7660ELR

Outdoor long-range Wi-Fi 6 access point

The GWN7660ELR brings Wi-Fi 6 outdoors with an IP68 rating, the highest in this range. Coverage runs up to 300 meters, and the internal antennas mean nothing sticks out to snap or corrode.

The 2.5G SFP port matters on big sites. You can run fiber to an AP at the far end of a yard where copper won't reach.

Grandstream GWN7670LR

Outdoor long-range Wi-Fi 7 access point

The GWN7670LR is the long-range flagship. It's Wi-Fi 7 with multi-link operation, reaches up to 350 meters, and switches between internal directional antennas and external omnidirectional ones. The directional pattern is 90 degrees on 2.4 GHz and 35 degrees on 5 GHz, so it suits a long, narrow area like a car park row or a perimeter road.

Grandstream lists a point-to-multipoint bridge mode (one to three, up to 1.5 km) as pending. Don't plan a building-to-building link on it until that feature ships.

Choosing

Choosing a GWN access point

Indoors, it comes down to Wi-Fi generation. The GWN7660E is Wi-Fi 6 with WPA3 and runs on plain PoE, which makes it the sensible default. Pick the GWN7630 when you want two Ethernet ports on the AP or you're extending an existing Wi-Fi 5 estate.

Outdoors, start with the shape of the area. For a general yard or courtyard, the GWN7660ELR gives you Wi-Fi 6, IP68 and a fiber option. For a long, narrow run, the GWN7670LR's directional antennas and 350 meter reach earn their price. The GWN7630LR makes sense where you want to fit your own antennas.

If your site already runs Ubiquiti UniFi or Ruijie, there's no reason to mix in GWN just for the brand. Both are good platforms, and we supply them too. GWN is the stronger case when the phones, PBX and Wi-Fi are all Grandstream.

Deployment notes for Oman

The outdoor models are rated for -30 to 60°C. A unit in direct summer sun on a metal pole can run hotter than the air around it, so mount it where it gets some shade if the site allows. Coastal sites in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah add salt air, which is another reason to favor the sealed IP68 GWN7660ELR where it fits the job.

Check the switch before you order. The GWN7630, GWN7630LR and GWN7670LR list 802.3at PoE+ as their power input, so plan PoE+ ports for them. Warranty and RMA are handled through Elite Infotech. We supply from our Muscat, Ruwi, Sohar and Salalah branches with delivery across Oman. Site surveys, installation and configuration go through our integrator and reseller network.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do Grandstream GWN access points need a controller?

No. Every model has an embedded controller that can manage up to 50 local GWN APs. Larger sites can use Grandstream's cloud platform or its on-site GWN Manager software.

Which GWN access point is best for outdoor use in Oman?

All three outdoor models are rated to 60°C operating. The GWN7660ELR has the highest weather rating at IP68. The GWN7670LR has the longest range at up to 350 meters.

Does the GWN7660E need a PoE+ switch?

No. It draws 12.95 W at most and runs on either 802.3af PoE or 802.3at PoE+.

Can the GWN7670LR work as a wireless bridge?

Grandstream lists point-to-multipoint bridging on the GWN7670LR as pending, for one to three links up to 1.5 km. Plan a bridge on it only once that feature is released.

Will Grandstream Wi-Fi phones work on GWN access points?

Yes. The GWN range is designed for voice over Wi-Fi with QoS for low-latency traffic, and it works with Grandstream's Wi-Fi desk and video phones.
