When you need an FXS gateway

An FXS gateway is for the analog phones you aren't replacing. Hotel rooms wired with copper, fax machines, lift and emergency phones, the handsets in a factory that nobody wants to recable. The gateway sits in the rack, takes a single Gigabit uplink to the network, and gives every analog port its own SIP account on your PBX.

The GXW4232 and GXW4248 are the high-density end of Grandstream's range. Each port registers independently, and the unit holds up to four SIP server profiles, so you can split ports across more than one system.

They pair naturally with a UCM6300 PBX, which provisions them with zero-config. They work just as well with any standard SIP platform, which matters if you're keeping an existing PBX for now.

Grandstream GXW4232

32-port FXS gateway

The GXW4232 gives you 32 analog ports, and you get them on individual RJ11 jacks as well as two 50-pin Telco connectors. That's handy when you're cutting over a site in stages. You can patch a few phones in directly with standard cables while the rest go through the Telco connectors to the existing distribution frame.

It runs from a 12 V adapter and fits a 1U slot.

Grandstream GXW4248

48-port FXS gateway

The GXW4248 packs 48 ports into the same 1U height, and all of them come out on two 50-pin Telco connectors. It has no individual RJ11 jacks, so plan on a patch panel or a direct run to the frame.

It's the one for hotels and hospitals with a full floor of analog rooms. It draws more power, from a 24 V 150 W supply, and the chassis is deeper at 255 mm.

Choosing

GXW4232 or GXW4248

Count your analog endpoints and add a margin. Up to about 28 lines, the GXW4232 leaves you spare ports. Beyond that, one GXW4248 is neater than two smaller units, since it's one box, one IP address and one uplink.

Look at how the building is wired too. If your analog extensions already terminate on a frame with 50-pin cabling, either unit drops in. If you need to plug phones in with ordinary RJ11 cords, only the GXW4232 has those jacks.

Deployment notes for Oman

The gateway registers each port as a SIP extension, so the ports appear on your PBX like any other phone. With a UCM6300 the gateway is found and provisioned automatically. Outside calls then go out over whatever trunk the PBX uses, typically a SIP trunk from Omantel or Ooredoo.

Long analog runs are fine up to 6,000 feet on 24 AWG cable. The GXW4248 needs its 150 W power supply, so check the rack's power budget. Warranty and RMA are handled through Elite Infotech. We supply from our Muscat, Ruwi, Sohar and Salalah branches with delivery across Oman. Installation and configuration go through our integrator and reseller network.

How many analog phones can a GXW4248 connect?

48. Each FXS port takes one analog phone or fax machine and registers its own SIP account.

Can I use the GXW4232 with ordinary RJ11 phone cables?

Yes. The GXW4232 has 32 RJ11 jacks as well as two 50-pin Telco connectors. The GXW4248 only has the Telco connectors.

Do these gateways support fax?

Yes. They support T.38 fax relay up to 14.4 kbps and switch to G.711 for fax pass-through.

Will a GXW4200 gateway work with a PBX that isn't Grandstream?

Yes, with any standard SIP platform. It holds up to four SIP server profiles, so you can point different ports at different systems.

Are the GXW4232 and GXW4248 rack mountable?

Yes. Both are 1U units that mount in a rack with front brackets or sit on a desk.
