LED Pixel Pitch Explained: How to Choose the Right Pitch and Viewing Distance

Pixel pitch is the one specification that sets what an LED screen costs and how sharp it looks from where people actually stand.

Get it wrong in one direction and you've paid for resolution nobody can see. Get it wrong in the other direction and a boardroom screen shows visible dots to everyone at the table. Get it right and a P2.5 wall in a showroom looks like a giant television.

This guide explains what the number means and how to turn it into a viewing distance. There's also a table of the pitches we actually specify for the kinds of spaces we supply and install across Oman.

What pixel pitch means

Pixel pitch is the distance, in millimetres, from the centre of one LED pixel to the centre of the next one beside it.

A P2.5 panel has 2.5 mm between pixel centres. A P10 panel has 10 mm. The "P" is just the industry shorthand for pitch.

Smaller pitch means the pixels are packed more tightly, so there are more of them per square metre and the image is sharper up close. Larger pitch means fewer pixels, a coarser image up close, and a much lower price per square metre.

That's the whole trade-off. Everything else follows from it.

Why a smaller pitch costs more

Pixel count rises with the square of the reduction in pitch. Halving the pitch from P4 to P2 doesn't double the LEDs, it quadruples them: 62,500 pixels per square metre becomes 250,000.

Each of those pixels is three LED chips, driven by ICs on a printed circuit board, calibrated at the factory. More pixels means more chips, more driver ICs, denser boards, more processing on the sending card, more heat to manage and more power to supply. The price follows the pixel count, and so does the weight and the power draw.

That's why over-specifying pitch is the most expensive mistake in LED procurement. A P1.5 wall viewed from 12 metres looks identical to a P3.9 wall viewed from 12 metres, because the eye can't resolve the difference at that range. You paid for pixels you'll never see.

How pixel pitch sets viewing distance

The eye stops seeing individual pixels once you're far enough away. How far depends on the pitch, and there are three ways the industry expresses it.

The quick rule

Minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly equal to the pixel pitch in millimetres, and the comfortable distance is two to three times that.

  • P1.5: looks smooth from about 1.5 m, comfortable from 3 m to 4.5 m
  • P2.5: looks smooth from about 2.5 m, comfortable from 5 m to 7.5 m
  • P4: looks smooth from about 4 m, comfortable from 8 m to 12 m
  • P6: looks smooth from about 6 m, comfortable from 12 m to 18 m
  • P10: looks smooth from about 10 m, comfortable from 20 m to 30 m

American suppliers phrase the same idea as "pitch times ten equals distance in feet". It's the same rule in different units.

The visual acuity distance

The formal version. A person with 20/20 vision stops resolving individual pixels at a distance of pitch in millimetres multiplied by 3,438. For a P2.5 panel that's 8.6 m. This is the distance at which the image is technically pixel-free, and it's longer than most people need in practice.

The comfortable viewing distance

Roughly half the visual acuity figure. For a P2.5 panel, about 4.3 m. This is the number we design to, because a screen is meant to be watched, not inspected.

The three methods give different numbers because they answer different questions. When a supplier quotes a viewing distance, ask which one they mean.

Which pixel pitch for which space

This table reflects what we specify for projects in Oman. Viewing distances are the nearest point a typical viewer stands, not the average.

Two things stand out from that table.

First, most indoor commercial work in Oman lands between P1.5 and P2.5. That's the range where price has fallen fastest in the last few years, and it's where most buyers should be looking.

Second, outdoor pitch is almost always coarser than people initially ask for. A road-facing screen on the Muscat Expressway or at a Sohar roundabout is seen from 30 m at 80 km/h. P10 is correct there. P4 would triple the cost for no visible benefit.

Pixel pitch and resolution aren't the same thing

Pitch is a density. Resolution is a count. You need both the pitch and the physical size to know what the screen will display.

The calculation is simple: divide the screen width in millimetres by the pitch to get horizontal pixels, and the same for height.

A 4 m by 2.25 m wall at P2.5 gives 1,600 by 900 pixels, which is a little under full HD. The same wall at P1.56 gives 2,564 by 1,442, comfortably above full HD. At P4 it gives 1,000 by 562, which is fine for video but will make a 12-point spreadsheet unreadable.

This matters for content. If the screen will show 4K video, a Windows desktop or a live broadcast feed, work out the pixel count first and pick the pitch that gets you there. If it will show looping brand video and large graphics, resolution is less critical and a coarser pitch is fine.

Lower pixel pitch isn't always better

Lower is sharper. Higher is cheaper. Neither is better until you know where the viewer stands.

The right pitch is the coarsest one that still looks smooth from the nearest realistic viewing position. Going finer than that only adds cost, power and heat.

The one exception is text. If the screen will display fine text, financial data, CAD drawings or control-room maps, err one step finer than the viewing-distance rule suggests. The eye is more forgiving with video than with a 10-point font.

P2.5: the workhorse indoor pitch

Buyers often ask whether 2.5 mm is a good pixel pitch. For most indoor work it's the default, and for good reason. It looks smooth from about 2.5 m, comfortable from 5 m, and the price per square metre sits at the point where the curve flattens.

It's the right choice for most showrooms, reception walls, retail displays, restaurant menus and hospitality lobbies. It's too coarse for a boardroom where people sit two metres away from spreadsheets, and it's finer than necessary for a stage watched from ten metres.

Common mistakes when specifying pitch

Specifying from the brochure, not the room

A supplier who quotes a pitch without asking where the nearest viewer stands is guessing. Measure the room or the sightline before anything else.

Ignoring content type

Video hides coarse pitch. Text exposes it. Decide what will be on the screen before you decide the pitch.

Treating pitch as the only quality metric

Brightness, refresh rate, grey-scale depth and calibration matter as much. A P1.9 wall with poor calibration looks worse than a well-calibrated P2.5 wall. Outdoors in Oman, brightness matters more than pitch: a screen that can't hold 5,000 nits or more will wash out in afternoon sun regardless of how fine the pixels are.

Forgetting the sending card and processor

A fine-pitch wall with several million pixels needs a video processor and sending cards rated for that pixel count. If the processor is undersized, the wall won't run at full resolution no matter what the panels can do.

Comparing pitch across indoor and outdoor modules

Outdoor modules at the same pitch are built differently: larger LED packages, higher brightness, sealed housings. A P4 outdoor panel and a P4 indoor panel are different products at different prices. Compare within the category.
