A Uniarch network switch in UAE installations is what powers and connects every camera on the site. The switch is the least glamorous part of a CCTV system and the most common cause of intermittent faults — an undersized power budget will drop cameras at night when infrared illuminators kick in and current draw peaks. We size it properly.
Two numbers decide whether a switch is right: port count and power budget. Port count is straightforward one port per camera, plus one uplink to the NVR or router, and leave spare ports if the site may expand.
Power budget is where installations go wrong. Each PoE port can deliver up to a maximum wattage, but the switch also has a total budget shared across all ports. Eight cameras drawing 10W each need 80W before any headroom, and camera draw peaks at night when infrared or white-light illuminators come on. A switch running at its limit will work perfectly in daylight and start dropping cameras after dark, which is a maddening fault to diagnose.
Distance matters too. Standard PoE runs reliably to about 100 metres over Cat5e or Cat6. Beyond that you need extended-range PoE ports, a fibre link, or a switch positioned mid-run. Plan this at cabling stage, not after the cameras are mounted.
