Yes. Once it has been set up, an Imou camera works without Wi-Fi. It keeps recording to its microSD card, and a wired CCTV system keeps recording to its NVR. What you lose until the connection returns is remote viewing, phone alerts and cloud backup.
Electricity is the real limit. A standard camera stops in a power cut unless you plan for it with backup power, a battery camera or a solar camera. Below, we set out what keeps working in each situation and which camera type fits, so you can choose before you buy. Elite Infotech supplies Imou cameras, NVRs and 4G cameras in the UAE.
What Keeps Working Without Wi-Fi, Internet or Power
| Situation | What keeps working | What stops | Camera type that fits |
| Wi-Fi drops (villa, apartment, small office) | Recording to the microSD card or NVR | Live view on your phone, alerts, cloud backup | Imou camera with a microSD card, or a wired NVR kit |
| No internet at all (warehouse or site with staff on hand) | Recording to the NVR, live view on a monitor connected to it | Viewing from your phone when you are away | Wired NVR system with a monitor |
| Power cut (shop, office, villa) | Battery and solar cameras | Mains-powered cameras, NVR and router, unless they are on a UPS | UPS on the NVR, router and PoE switch, or battery and solar cameras |
| Remote site with no Wi-Fi or mains power (farm, plot, construction site) | 4G SIM cameras, where there is mobile signal | Wi-Fi-only cameras | Imou 4G camera with a solar panel |
How an Imou Camera Records Without Wi-Fi
Imou cameras save video to a microSD card inside the camera. Imou lists the memory card as the default storage, with cloud storage as an optional extra. Because the card sits inside the camera, recording does not depend on Wi-Fi.
So if your Wi-Fi drops, a plug-in Imou camera with a card keeps recording. It just needs power, and recording is switched on in the app.
While the Wi-Fi is down, these stop:
- Live viewing in the Imou Life app
- Motion alerts on your phone
- Uploads to Imou cloud storage
The footage stays on the card. Once the connection is back, you can play it back in the app.
Three Things to Know Before You Rely on the Card
- Setup needs a network. You add an Imou camera through the Imou Life app, with your phone and the camera on the same network. Imou recommends keeping the phone, camera and router within 30 cm of each other during setup.
- The card overwrites old footage. When it is full, the oldest recordings are replaced by new ones automatically.
- Card size decides how far back you can go. Imou’s own estimate is about 12 days on a 128GB card for a 2MP camera, and about 6 days for a 4MP camera. Choose a high-endurance card made for constant recording, such as our Kingston microSD cards.
CCTV Works Without Internet When It Records to an NVR
A wired CCTV system records to a network video recorder (NVR) on your premises. The cameras connect to the NVR by cable, and the NVR saves video to its own hard drive. None of this needs the internet. Wired CCTV doesn’t use Wi-Fi at all, so a Wi-Fi problem won’t stop it recording.

You can also watch the cameras live on site. Connect a monitor or TV to the NVR and you can view every camera with no internet connection at all. The Imou N110 NVR has HDMI and VGA outputs for this and supports up to 10 cameras.
The internet only matters when you want to:
- Watch from your phone while you are away
- Receive push notifications
- Back footage up to the cloud

Key Points at a Glance
- Recording happens on the camera’s card or the NVR’s hard drive, not over the internet.
- Wi-Fi and internet are only needed for remote viewing, alerts and cloud storage.
- First-time setup of an Imou camera needs a network and the Imou Life app.
- Power is the weak point. Plan for a UPS, battery or solar if you cannot afford gaps.
- For sites with no broadband, a 4G SIM camera gives you remote viewing over mobile data.
How CCTV Keeps Working Without Electricity
Standard CCTV stops in a power cut. The cameras, the NVR, the router and the PoE switch all run on mains power.
There are two ways to keep recording:
- Add a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). Plug the NVR, router and PoE switch into it, and the system keeps running for a while during an outage. Run time depends on the size of the UPS and how much power your equipment draws.
- Use battery or solar cameras. These do not depend on mains power, so they keep recording through a power cut. They also suit sites with no electricity supply at all.
One catch: a power cut usually takes your router down too. A battery Wi-Fi camera will keep saving to its card, but it cannot send alerts until the router is back. A battery camera with 4G can still reach your phone through the mobile network.
Imou 4G SIM Cameras for Sites With No Wi-Fi
An Imou 4G camera connects through a SIM card instead of Wi-Fi, using a UAE mobile network. That means you can watch live and get phone alerts at sites with no broadband, such as farms, construction sites and storage yards.
It needs two things: mobile signal where the camera is mounted, and a 4G SIM with an active data plan. Live viewing uses data, so size the plan to how often you will check in.

Two models to know:
- Imou AOV Dual 10MP solar 4G camera: two 5MP lenses, 4G and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, a 10,000mAh battery and a solar panel. It switches to 4G on its own if the Wi-Fi drops. Once the Wi-Fi is back, you switch it back in the Imou Life app. When nothing is happening, it records a low-frame-rate image every few seconds, then switches to full video when it detects a person or vehicle. MicroSD cards up to 512GB.
- Imou Cruiser Dual 2C 4G: a 3MP fixed lens plus a 3MP pan-tilt lens, with a 4G SIM slot and an Ethernet port. It runs on mains power, so it suits sites that have electricity but no broadband.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Imou camera work without Wi-Fi?
Yes, once it has been set up. An Imou camera with a microSD card keeps recording locally if Wi-Fi drops. You lose live remote viewing, phone alerts and cloud backup until the connection returns. First-time setup needs the Imou Life app and a network.
Can CCTV cameras record without the internet?
Yes. Wired CCTV systems record to an NVR or DVR on site, and many standalone cameras record to a microSD card, all without internet. The Internet is only needed for remote viewing, push notifications and cloud storage.
Do CCTV cameras work without electricity?
Standard CCTV cameras stop during a power cut. To keep recording, add a UPS for the NVR, router and PoE switch, or choose battery-powered or solar cameras for sites without mains power.
What camera should I use where there is no Wi-Fi?
Use a 4G SIM camera, such as an Imou 4G model, to watch over mobile data. For sites with no power, choose a solar 4G camera. For recording on site only, a microSD card camera or wired NVR kit works without a network once set up.
Can I watch my cameras on my phone without internet?
Not from outside your site. To watch from your phone while you’re away, the camera or NVR needs an internet connection through Wi-Fi, Ethernet or a 4G SIM. With no internet at all, you can still watch live on a monitor or TV connected to the NVR’s HDMI or VGA output.
